Walk through book showing pictures before reading. Discuss what students see and predict story.

Introduce 5-7 key vocabulary words with visuals before reading. Students repeat and act out.
Materials: Vocabulary cards, images
Discuss topic in students' first language first, then bridge to English. Use bilingual word cards.
Materials: Bilingual vocabulary cards, translation app
Pair strong reader with developing reader. Take turns reading sentences or paragraphs.
Grouping: Strategic pairs, mixed ability
Whole class reads together following teacher's pace. Builds fluency and confidence.
Tip: Use pointer to track text
Students read independently and annotate text with questions, connections, and insights.
Materials: Sticky notes, highlighters
Provide audio recording of text. Students follow along, hearing pronunciation and intonation.
Tech: Text-to-speech, recorded reading
Provide sentence starters: "A _____ helps by _____." Students fill in blanks.
Example: "A firefighter helps by putting out fires."
Use CGE4 p.12 thank you note template. Students follow structure with own content.
Structure: Greeting → Reason → Example → Closing
Write 2-3 paragraph thank you letter with introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
Challenge: Include specific examples and varied vocabulary
Provide word bank with English and L1 translations. Visual supports for each word.
Materials: Bilingual word cards, picture dictionary
Students think individually, discuss with partner using sentence frame, then share with class.
Frame: "I think _____ because _____."
Groups of 4 discuss essential question. Each student contributes at least once.
Roles: Facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, reporter
Students prepare and deliver 3-5 minute presentation on community helper research.
Skills: Public speaking, visual aids, Q&A
Students act out vocabulary words and actions. Combines movement with language learning.
Example: Act out "protect," "serve," "rescue"
